Biography
Lee Bae is a Korean artist born in Cheongdo District, South Korea in 1956. In 1979, he studied Fine Arts in Seoul. He moved to Paris in 1990 in order to discover contemporary art in Europe and to be inspired by these creations. His first workshop is in Pantin in an old factory in Seita where he begins by working with wooden charcoal instead of charcoal, a less expensive material, with which they find its origins since charcoal evokes the world of ink from china and calligraphy.
He creates paintings, then wooden charcoal installations in order to get out of the restricted framework of the canvas, which allows him to play with space and create a more immersive experience with the viewer. He also works with staples, in order to put these two materials in opposition: one natural and the other industrial linked to the consumer society.
