Biography
Driven by a constant exploration of light and movement, Josée Nadeau creates work in which the legacy of Impressionist landscape painting is expressed through a resolutely contemporary language.
Born in Montreal in 1963, Josée Nadeau is a Canadian painter whose work bridges the gap between Impressionism and contemporary painting. Known for her large-scale works depicting landscapes and water lilies, she has been developing an artistic practice for over forty years in which light, color, and movement take center stage.
Her talent was recognized at a very early age. As early as age seven, her teachers noted her unique sensitivity to light. In 1976, she was granted special permission to enroll in life drawing classes for adults at the Ottawa School of Art.
In 1985, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University in Montreal before continuing her training at the prestigious Emma Lake Workshop, a mecca for modern Canadian painting. The following year, she completed her studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where she deepened her mastery of European painting.
Through her travels between Canada, Europe, and the American West, Josée Nadeau developed a personal pictorial language in which the landscape becomes, above all, a space for emotion.
His work emphasizes large formats, sweeping gestures, and a generous use of material that conveys sensations rather than a faithful representation of reality.
Her career took on an international dimension beginning in the 2000s. Her works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and art fairs, notably at ArtExpo New York, in Miami, and in Paris. In 2010, she received the Success Story Award at ArtExpo New York, recognizing her artistic journey as well as the originality of her live painting performances, in which music directly accompanies her brushstrokes.
Recognition of her work is also evident in the art market. In 2022, her monumental canvas *The Great Water Lilies of Giverny* sold for 29,000 euros at an auction in Paris.
Today, Josée Nadeau continues to create work deeply inspired by landscapes, gardens, and the play of light. Through a style of painting that blends the Impressionist legacy with a resolutely contemporary approach, she invites viewers to embark on a sensory experience in which color becomes the primary vehicle for emotion.
