Biography
Kim Duck Yong received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Seoul National University. His works are exhibited at the National Museum of Modern Art and the Park Soo-Gun Museum. Recognized as an emerging artist in Asia, he is attracting the attention of prestigious auction houses such as Christie’s, where he participated in contemporary Asian art auctions in Hong Kong from 2004 to 2009.
Drawing on his experience of oriental painting, he devotes himself primarily to working with wood, a material in perfect symbiosis with nature. Through sculpture, engraving and painting, or by adding objects to this natural material, he manages to breathe new life into his creations.
His works elegantly showcase anonymous people or objects, encouraging us to reflect on our inner essence. The pieces of wood he selects each tell a story, often coming from old demolished houses or furniture laden with memories. The cotton he associates with them further enriches this narrative. What’s more, the marks of time on the wood create a link between past and present. According to Kim Duck Yong, his work reflects his heart rather than his technique, and resonates deeply with our nostalgia.
He currently lives and works in Seoul.
